What are the steps to self-publishing a book?
-
Step 1 – Editing
The first step of your publishing journey is to make sure that your text is right! We strongly recommend that you have your manuscript professionally edited before publication. We can help with this; find out more about our editing services.
-
Step 2 – Layout and Typesetting
One of the key differences between professional and amateur books is the layout and typesetting. When readers open a book, they expect the text to be formatted correctly and clearly laid out. Odd paragraphs, uneven margins, and incorrect line breaks and indentations immediately make your book look untidy and unprofessional which is a huge turn-off for readers. That’s why it’s so important to have a professional designer lay out your book, particularly if it includes images, diagrams or tables, and we can help; find out more about our design services.
-
Step 3 – Cover Design
Your book cover design is one of your book’s most important selling features and needs to not only look professional, but to stand out amongst the thousands of others that are published. We can help you achieve this. Our expert designers can work closely with you on your book cover design to make sure it has a real wow factor.
-
Step 4 – Print
You will see, hold, and feel a physical copy of your book before signing it off! You can make any changes you want to before pressing the ‘self-publish’ button. Once you are 100% happy with the final product, we will go to print with the number of copies you choose. Now you are ready to share your book with the world.
-
Step 5 – Selling and Distribution
Finally, we move on to selling your book! The last thing any self-published author wants is a living room stacked high with books that they need to package up, take to the post office and send to customers. We can help with everything from helping you list your book on Amazon, or storing your books and shipping them out as you get orders using our fulfilment service.
Why should I Self-publish my book?
It may be that your book is too niche for a traditional publishing house. Publishers like most businesses need to make a profit. If your book doesn’t appeal to a mass audience or could be deemed as controversial then you may find it hard to have your book traditionally published.
There are many benefits to self-publishing your book, the most important one is that you are in complete control. When traditionally publishing a book generally the publisher will have their own ideas on the content and how the finished product looks.
You can self-publish a book very quickly whist not compromising on quality. You can start writing a book and literally have that same book in finished form in your hands within months.
There is money to be made! Depending on your pricing, self-publishing your book can result in much better profits than the traditional small royalty-based payments. Yes, you will need to pay to have the books printed and sent to your customers, but this should leave you with at least 25% profit per book. Here is an example – based on a standard black and white novel of 200 pages:
Book Sale Price = £10
Amazon Fee = £2.50
Print Cost = £3.00
Postage Cost = £2.00
Profit = £2.50
How much does it cost to self-publish a book?
The cost of self-publishing can vary massively depending on the services you require. You can self-publish your book for as little as £100 if you do all the work yourself. However, we would advise that you use a professional in that field for each of the steps mentioned above. Self-publishing a book, like any other investment, requires an initial outlay before you start to see a return.
